Alter-Pharm Patient
A clear, jargon-free guide to registering as a cannabis patient and accessing your medication through Alter-Pharm — from first visit to your private patient portal.
Start your journey by visiting your nearest Alter-Pharm branch. Our staff will welcome you and walk you through the registration process.
In compliance with SAHPRA regulations, all cannabis patients are required to complete a Section 21 application form in person. A wet signature is mandatory — this cannot be done online.
This form must be completed and signed in person at your Alter-Pharm branch.
Your Section 21 form is reviewed by our in-house SAHPRA-approved doctor. No outside GP visit is required.
Once your prescription is received and verified by our licensed pharmacist, your medication is prepared and ready for collection.
Once you are registered in our system, your Patient Portal account is activated. This gives you secure access to our private online store where you can browse available pharmacy stock at any time.

Do I need my own doctor to get a prescription?
No. Alter-Pharm has an in-house SAHPRA-approved doctor who reviews your Section 21 application and issues the prescription directly. You do not need to visit an outside GP.
Can I complete the Section 21 form online?
No. SAHPRA regulations require the Section 21 form to be completed and signed in person at an Alter-Pharm branch with a wet (physical) signature. Our staff will assist you.
How long does the process take?
From submitting your Section 21 form, the doctor review and prescription process typically takes 5–10 business days. You will be notified as soon as your medication is ready for collection.
Is my information kept private?
Absolutely. All patient data, prescriptions, and medical records are encrypted and handled in full compliance with the POPIA Act. Only your assigned Alter-Pharm pharmacist and doctor have access.
What happens after I am registered?
Once registered, your Patient Portal account is activated. You can log in to view available stock, manage your prescription history, and browse our private online store — completely hidden from the general public.
